Beat the Middle Tennessee Heat: OSHA Compliance & Hydration Guide for Contractors

  • What to Look For: Dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, extreme fatigue, heavy sweating, and cold, pale, or clammy skin with a fast, weak pulse.

  • Immediate Action: Move the worker to a shaded or air-conditioned area immediately. Have them sit down, loosen heavy clothing or PPE, and sip cool water. Stay with them and monitor their condition.

Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency — Call 911 Immediately)

Heat stroke occurs when the body loses its ability to regulate temperature. This is a medical emergency.

  • What to Look For: Confusion, slurred speech, altered mental state, irrational behavior, seizures, loss of consciousness, a fast and strong pulse, and hot, dry skin (or profuse sweating in heavy exertion).

  • Immediate Action: Call 911 immediately. While waiting for EMS, move the worker to the shade and aggressively cool their body—apply ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin, soak their clothing with cold water, or fan them vigorously. Do not force them to drink fluids if they are confused or unconscious.

Having a water cooler on-site isn't enough to satisfy an OSHA inspector or keep a crew safe. Management should:
